North Somerset welcomed Dudley Town FC to Nailsea 4G and in a strange but incredibly entertaining game, both sides played some great stuff.
1st half - Dudley came firing out the blocks and took a fortunate early lead 2 mins in when some good play down the right resulted in an over-hit cross ending up in the top corner 0-1. NS reacted and played some excellent football and probably dominated the rest of the half. Dudley hit NS with a sucker-punch when the impressive Ben Stokes latched onto a through ball and rounded the keeper to slot in for 0-2. Right on HT NS got back into the game when a powerful run from Jacob Grinnell was finished by himself with a powerful effort 1-2 HT.
2nd half - Much of the opposite to the 1st half with Dudley with the better of the play but with NS grabbing the goals. The visitors regained their 2 goal advantage when the hosts failed to clear in their own box and Stokes was there again to smash home 1-3. NS however responded with 15 mins to go when a good run and cross by Drew Gwilliam was met by Harry Olive from close range to half the deficit 2-3. However the away side could be forgiven for thinking they'd won it with 10 mins to go when they caught NS on the counter-attack and Stokes completed his hat-trick 2-4. However straight from kick off, an NS long ball was not dealt with and the lively Grinnell latched on to round the keeper for 3-4. An exciting finish and with it being. Cup game, NS went 3 at the back and threw the kitchen sink and took the game to pens late on when a goalmouth scramble saw Grinnell complete his hat-trick from close range much to the delight of the home side 4-4 FT.
Both teams gave an excellent account of themselves and penalties is a cruel way to settle any cup tie but it was NS advanced winning 5-4 on pens. We wish Dudley Town all the best for the rest of the season.
