Two second half goals gave Hereford FC victory in a tight, competitive and breathless quarter-final cup game at The Meres, this morning.
In the first half, chances were at a premium and defences, led by Freddie Wheatley for Grantham and Charlie Bemand for Grantham, were predominantly on top. In terms of attacking play, Jake Lovelace shot just wide for Grantham and a 10-pass, end-to-end move ended in a shot for Flynn Slater, while, for Hereford, a good run and shot by Kyle Smith was well saved by Dave Willumsen.
Grantham started the brighter in the second half, with further chances for Jake Lovelace, Flynn Slater and Louis Cross. But it was Hereford who found a way to score. A period of Hereford pressure led to a free-kick, which brilliantly found Cameron Davies at the far post who made no mistake with a fine header.
Although Grantham tried to get back into the game, Charlie Bemand and his fellow defenders continued to defend excellently for the visitors. And, when Grantham were able to break through, Hereford's keeper, Aiden Bryant, quickly and bravely came off his line to block shots and deny the home team on two separate occasions.
A little slice of luck also came Hereford's way when the referee was unsighted with a potential handball in the box and, a few minutes later, Hereford made the most of this piece of fortune when they doubled their lead. A great pass from Cameron Davies inside the Grantham left back, led to a first-time cross to the far post which was calmly finished by Kyle Smith.
Both sides still had more chances to score. Femmi Kisanji and Freddie Streeter both shot narrowly wide for Grantham, while a rapid break nearly led to a third goal for Hereford. But the scoring had finished and Hereford were able to see the game out to win the tie and to progress into the semi-finals.
We wish Ben, Kyle and all the Hereford boys and parents all the very best in the next round and thank them for a high-quality game that was played with an excellent sporting spirit by both teams.
