Match Report

After a lot of rain this week, our allocated pitch was waterlogged so we moved one along-still not great but playable. Our warmup had been disrupted and we made a slow start. We took a while to adjust to SGW formation and went 0:1 down on 4 minutes. The ball was free on the edge of our box for Callum with no central midfielders close so Alex had to come out of defence but Callum managed to get his shot away which went over Conor's head-he got a hand to it but couldn't quite tip it over. Soon after on 7 minutes Conor made a good save clearing off the line after a corner. On 17 minutes we made a subtle change in formation to combat SGW and started to get more into the game. Alex moved into midfield started to clear up and distribute out before the ball made it to our defensive line. We made a sub on 26 minutes and were starting to get more joy in attack. On 34 minutes Alex made a great break and set Cam free who just shot wide. On 38 minutes we went 0:2 down just before halftime. A scramble in the box saw an overload at the back post and Fahme tapped in just inside the post. We were up against it now and were looking at going out of the Cup. Soon after though we managed to get a lifeline. Cam was fouled on the edge of the box and he got straight up and struck a sweet free kick past the wall straight into the corner-1:2 and we were still in with a chance at halftime.

We started the second half with real purpose and went close on 7 minutes-a cross shot from Elijah and Morgan just missed sliding in at the back post. We had another chance on 12 minutes from an Eliot cross, Morgan hit the gk-a great save from Nabeel. Two more chances followed on 19 & 20 minutes both from Cam-the first a corner curled to the back post but no one on the end of it and the second a long shot just tipped over by Nabeel again. We made subs and pressed on and on 31 minutes finally got the equaliser. Another corner from Cam bounced around in the area and Charlie tapped in although the defender nearly cleared it away-2:2 and next goal winner. SGW had a free kick cleared and we had two late chances but missed squaring across the goal then put the ball just past the post. But the last minutes were fragmented due to slowing the ball down and two injuries. The first Nabeel got caught diving bravely at feet then there was a clash of heads in midfield with Joe coming away with a nosebleed. This led to several minutes over time but neither team could find the winner so straight to penalties.

Both teams were shattered from the heavy pitch and it all came down to this. The tension was unbearable but the first 10 penalties were all scored-5:5 and then the agony of sudden death. The next six penalties were all scored mostly with the keepers having no chance although a couple were close-8:8. Then the ninth penalties and SGW took theirs first and scored but we missed ours just past the post. We were out and SGW went through to the semis-good luck to them. Overall both teams battled hard on a poor pitch due to the weather and neither team deserved to lose-an epic game that we'll remember for a long time.
