With no premier league fixtures all eyes turned to our little corner of Hampshire for this Saturday’s 3 pm football fix. Thanks very much to all at GPS for allowing this late kick off.
The game started at a fast pace with early chances at either end. GPS were holding a high line and compressing the midfield making it difficult for the Devils to get their game going. In the 6th minute after some strong work in midfield the ball was played out right to Ethan Walsh who shipped it forward into the space behind the GPS defence for Marcus Price to run onto and take it forward and score. GOAL HAMPSHIRE DEVILS - MARCUS PRICE 1-0. The Devils had the tails up and Marcus had the bit between his teeth as the Devils pushed for another with constant balls into space and they were soon rewarded with another goal this time the effervescent Price latched onto a back pass, rounded the keeper and scored his and the Devil’s second with only 12 minutes on the clock. GOAL HAMPSHIRE DEVILS - MARCUS PRICE 2-0.
GPS were a little stunned and came out strong after the setback with a marked increase in intensity driven by Aiden McManus and Eldad Adjei stepping up and providing more ball for the exciting forward line. This pressure soon told and after some neat work and a switch of play the lively Gabriel Mensah stole in to get GPS back in the game. GOAL GPS GABRIEL MENSAH 2-1.
We now had a game on and both sides battled hard to gain the upper hand . As the half drew to a close the ball broke down the left to Evan Anderson who danced his way towards goal and finished with aplomb to restore the Devils 2 goal lead. GOAL - HAMPSHIRE DEVILS EVAN ANDERSON 3-1. Shortly after , the half time whistle blew and 18 weary bodies trudged their way towards their coaches for refuelling and repurposing.
The second half was a tense and thrilling affair. The midfield battle was raised up a notch and great credit has to go to both central midfield partnerships Bobby Moore and George Winkworth for the Devils and William Staniford and Eldad Adjej for GPS who battled each other all game long to give their team the superiority. The game ebbed and flowed with chances for both sides and GPS can count themselves unlucky not to have got on the scoresheet on the second half but the Devils stayed together as a unit , kept communicating and caused their fare share of chances for themselves. A strong performance by both sides with the Hampshire Devils coming our deserved winners with the score line 3-1.
A high level game of football that kept everyone on their edge of their seats and it was a pleasure to be involved in. Thanks to everyone at GPS and we look forward to playing you again and wish you well for the rest of the season.
