Today saw the visit of Evesham United at the Q3 in what promised to be an exciting challenge for BSG, given Evesham's pedigree at this level, and the heavy defeat they inflicted on us during pre season.
BSG immediately set out their intent with an effort from Aston Toon, quickly followed by another effort from Bradley Jordan. Ashton was holding the ball up well in his lone striker role, and he was rewarded in the 19th minute when he ran through on goal, still having work to do to outpace the defender and slide it past the keeper. This sparked a reaction from Evesham, and but for a smart save from Birdy, it could've been level. There was no lack of commitment from both teams, the game was end to end stuff, with both teams refusing to give much away. The score at the halftime interval was 1-0 to the home side.
It wasn't difficult to tell that the away teams coaches were looking for a response from their boys, and they certainly got one with the away team taking it to the home team at the start of the second half. With the amount of pressure they were applying, they got the breakthrough they were looking for with a fierce dipping shot from outside the box to equalise. Evesham continued to show their quality from dead ball situations and used their long throw in as a potent weapon. The away side then took the lead, with another looping effort, and deservedly so. It was now a chance to see if BSG had the character to come from behind against a strong team. They did so with aplomb, with a spectacular effort from Cameron Harris from outside the box. The was still more drama to come, with the home team conceding a penalty with only minutes left on the clock. Fortunately for the home side, the penalty was put wide of the post, and the game finished 2-2.
BSG won the resulting penalty shoot out 3-2.
A great game for the neutral, played in a tremendous spirit by both teams. Good luck to our visitors for the rest of the season, and a special mention for the referee, her game management today was top draw.
