Mansfield welcomed Solihull Academy today to a very cold and windy Joseph Whitaker sports college.
Despite the awful conditions both teams attempted to play good football but Mansfield’s early goal set them up from the start. Jack Heald opened the scoring with a curling shot into the bottom corner of the Solihull goal from the edge of the penalty box. Mansfield’s second followed shortly after when Josh Tate finished neatly from Freddy Blackwell’s Corner with an excellent side foot volley 2-0. The first periods goalscoring ended with Blackwell curling brilliantly into the top corner from 25 yards 3-0.
The Second period was very much the same Solihull intent on playing football but Mansfield turning their possession into goals , Toby Francis scored first , slipping the ball through his markers legs and curling home , Charley Strouther claimed Mansfield’s 5th of the day racing onto Will Millers through ball before smashing home. The final goal of the first half was Francis’ second of the day and Mansfield’s 6th. HT 6-0.
The second half saw a very even opening 10 mins as Mansfield struggled to adjust to facing the wind but after seeing out Solihull’s positive opening Mansfield again took a foothold. Harvey Simpson scored his first of the day after receiving a neat lay off and he curled home a chipped finish past the stranded James Davies in Solihull’s goal who had previously made a number of great saves. Mansfield’s 8th and 9th were identical as Bradley Mee curled home from 20 yards with his right foot then exactly the same with his left foot before leaving the field feeling ill.
The last period saw Simpson’s second , Francis complete his hat-trick and Adam Clark hammer home a late penalty.
