Oxford City welcomed Wells City to Marsh Lane to play the JPL Cup second round game.Oxford City kicked off to start the game and immediately lost possession whereupon Wells moved the ball quickly into the Oxford half of the pitch where Ambrosini expertly picked out the run of Fowler who finished the move with a ice cool finish. 10 seconds or so on the clock and Wells had the lead. To their credit Oxford didn't panic and kept possession well for the next few minutes as they looked to put the quick start by Wells behind them. Oxford got back in the game when Hedges picked out Whitburn who took the ball in his stride and finished well. The next goal came when Stone put a ball behind the Oxford defence which Fowler finished off again very well to restore Wells one goal advantage. Oxford equalised shortly after when Lovick picked out Whitburn who held off the defender well to score. The rest of the half was played out with both sides creating a few half chances but nothing that goalkeepers Amor or Gibbings weren't equal too. (HT 2-2). The second half started with Oxford on the front foot with Nuzi starting to influence the game. It wasn't long before he picked out Whitburn who finished well to claim his hat trick. Shortly afterwards Nuzi picked out Whitburn again in the box who withheld the challenge and laid it back to Barrett who side footed into the net. After this Wells had a period of domination and were starting to force Oxford back as they looked to get themselves back into the game. This resulted in a few half chances and several corners but the Oxford defence stood firm. The final goal of the game came in Oxfords favour when Barrett broke a few tackles in midfield and played in Whitburn for a run in on goal. Another good finish resulted and Whitburn bagged his 4th goal in what was an all action display today. Also putting in a shift was Murrell for Wells, showing real energy and determination down the right. Wells to their credit kept looking for openings and probably deserved something for their 2nd half play but it wasn't to be and Oxford closed the game out (FT 5-2). A really good game today played in fantastic spirit. We wish Mark and his Wells team all the best for the rest of the season.
