Thanks to Joe Westhead for the match report again.
Today Maghull welcomed Chorley for our third game in the JPL.
In a cagey start, both teams pushed for dominance and canceled each other out for most of the first quarter with Maghull looking slightly the more likely to score. The first goal eventually came on 17 minutes when Callum Langton whipped in a cross for Freddie Price to side-foot home to make it 1-0 to Maghull. The lads were beginning to edge the game and were pushing for a second before the first quarter ended, however, Maghull went in 1-0 up.
The start of the second quarter saw 3 changes early on and the game was once again in the balance and after a mix-up in the Maghull box Chorley pounced and calmly scored to level the game at 1-1 within about 10 minutes of the start of the second quarter, but if there's one thing this team does really well it bounces back quickly and within 3 minutes Callum Langton cut in from the left and unleashed a rasping shot that went straight through the Chorley keeper to make it 2-1 to Maghull.
Maghull quickly scored their third through George Scanlan to make it 3-1 but the game was still in the balance with possession shared.
Another goal by Charlie Allan in the third quarter helped put the game beyond Chorley - or did it. Within 10 minutes Chorley made a fight of it and scored to make the score 4-2. Again Maghull responded quickly with Adam Cato taking on the Chorley centre-half with the ricochet falling to Charlie Allan to grab his second of the game to make it 5-2.
Quarter 4 began and within minutes of the start, Ben Clarke was called upon to make a great save, parrying the ball onto the post.
The lads were seeing the game out when Chorley continued to fight back with a third goal, but this turned out to be a final consolation as the home side saw out the game to make the final score 5-3.
Although Maghull finished 5-3 victors the display was far from fluid and the game was scrappy in large parts. The lads dug in and at times passed the ball well but changes in formation and personnel stemmed our flow a little. Chorley was formidable opponents and better valued than their recent result in the JPL suggested. We have done amazingly well winning our first 3 games but we must not allow complacency to creep in. We will have a number of injuries throughout the season and we will miss some key players but we have an excellent squad which is capable of playing some really exciting football but we need to remain consistent with our passages of play and with our teamwork. We have an excellent work ethic and a very professional attitude from parents to players and management.
I'm not sure if our form has dipped since our first 2 games or whether Chorley made it more difficult for us than our previous 2 opponents, but if we continue to believe in ourselves and play as a unit then we will be difficult to beat, and at this level this is what we need to compete.
The future of Maghull FC looks bright.
